WHAT TO WEAR??????

DON’T MATCH! COORDINATE!!!

A good tip is to start with Mom’s outfit and then work from that. As an example - if Mom is wearing a lovely floral maxi dress, pick colors from the fabric and purchase solids for everyone else (especially boys). Allow personalities to shine with colors and patterns. Pick a couple of colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme. EXAMPLE: Shades of blue, or green, or purple. Jewel tones. Brown, Maroon & Mustard for Fall. Emerald Green & Maroon for Winter. Navy & Yellow for Summer. Pastels for Spring.

MIX SOLIDS AND PATTERNS

Having everyone in just solids can get a little boring but on the other side of that, having everyone is some kind of pattern would be completely overwhelming. So try to mix the two. Like I mentioned above, start with moms floral maxi or dads plaid shirt and pick colors that coordinate with that.

THINK ABOUT THE BACKGROUND/LOCATION

EXAMPLE: If we are shooting outdoors in the summer where there’s a lot of green trees & grass……you probably shouldn’t wear green.

JUST SAY NO TO LOGOS AND CHARACTERS!

Your little one may love their Toy Story shirt or your teenager might be obsessed with under armor, but you’ll want to skip it for the family photo session. Just like patterns, characters or logos on shirts can be pretty distracting and make your photo look too busy.

TEXTURES ARE YOUR FRIEND

I am a huge fan of a comfy cotton fitted shirt. However, in photographs I like to add textures like layers, scarves or belts to add a little more to the image. Don’t shy away from different textures. A lot of times those super soft comfy fabrics tend to cling to all the wrong areas and are not flattering at all. More structured pieces are way more flattering.

By adding different textures through the material of your family outfits or your accessories you are adding depth and interest to your photos.

FIT YOUR PERSONALITY AND HOME DECOR

BE YOU!!! If you’re not a dress wearing girly girl….THEN DON’T WEAR A DRESS. If you’re not comfortable in heels….DON’T wear them! Pick clothes that scream who you are as a family. Nothing good comes from trying to be someone you’re not!

These photos will be hanging on your walls and treasured for years to come. By choosing simple, classic clothes you will help give your images a timeless feel. Do you like bright colors? Neutrals? Since you will be hanging these photos in your house you want to make sure the colors of your clothes go with the color scheme of your home.
